A letter (“True Story,” April 8) provides a second hand report (apparently the writer wasn’t there) concerning two seventh grade skateboarders who allege that a black Mercedes tried to hit them on Skyline Drive on March 28.
If that actually happened it was not reported to the police, according to a spokeswoman. Rather than taking it up with the police, the writer prefers to engage in a potentially libelous smear asking “Is the driver possibly a member of SNAG?” That is an example of the despicable “big lie”, a propaganda technique developed by Adolf Hitler in his 1925 book “Mein Kampf,” for a lie so “colossal” that no one would believe that someone “could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously.”
The reality of the skateboarding issue in Laguna was more accurately described by a resident addressing the City Council at its April 5 meeting. Precariously descending a steep Laguna road at unsafe speed, a skateboarder lost control of his skateboard, fell off, and slid under an oncoming car, which fortunately had already come to a complete stop. That’s the kind of behavior that leads to dangerous interactions between cars and skateboarders in Laguna Beach.
