Legion Gets on Base Despite Steal by Thieves
Pin stripe jerseys for 12 players on the American Legion Little League team, including socks, belts and hats, disappeared from a Skyline driveway last month, days before the season opened last month though the theft was only reported last week, according to police and Little League officials.
The $1,165 theft is a costly loss for the league, which pays for the uniforms from player fees, said league president Jennifer Sweet. The loss was a bummer for the kids, too, who had to start the season in t-shirts rather than uniforms. The uniforms were set out overnight for pick up by the coach, police Sgt. Louise Callus said.
“I don’t know what kind of person(s) would steal youth baseball uniforms, but it has caused us to rethink how safe it is to leave something on a doorstep for someone to pick up,” said Sweet, explaining that the delay in reporting the theft was due to preoccupation with outfitting players for opening day.
