Error Escalates into Tense Moment

Laguna Beach police detained at gunpoint two male juveniles, who were later released without charge, on Sunday about 10:15 p.m. in the 300 block of Crescent Bay due to an erroneous report.
Officers were responding to a report by a Newport Beach resident that tailed a car into Laguna driven by an armed man that had entered a residence and then fled. Police concluded the resident followed the wrong vehicle, Sgt. Louise Callus said.
No weapon was found in the car driven by juveniles, she said.
Heart Sick Over Craft Theft
An 11-foot-tall paper mache mailbox giraffe and distinctive neighborhood landmark on Temple Terrace Drive was discovered missing early Monday, May 30, by its owner.
“We’re heartbroken,” said longtime resident Bonnie Stormont, whose husband, Paul Maddux, made the chicken wire creature sometime around 2002. “It’s been part of the family a long time,” she said.
The vandals apparently did not treat the creature kindly, pulling out some of her mane. Even so, “I’d like it to be returned, no questions asked,” said Stormont, pointing out that tampering with a mailbox could be prosecuted as a federal offense.
