‘Jazz on the Green’ Kicks Off

Jessy J

The Festival green will sizzle Saturday, July 9, when Jessy J, a contemporary young jazz artist, makes her debut as part of the Festival of Arts’ series “Jazz on the Green.”

Jessy J’s “Tequila Moon” won “contemporary jazz song of the year” from Radio & Records and Billboard in 2008, when she also received debut artist recognition. Her third album, “Hot Sauce,” is scheduled for release next month.

“We could not have asked for a better artist to launch our Jazz on the Green series than Jessy J,” said the festival’s director of special events, Susan Davis. “She’s young, she’s beautiful, she’s delightful, and her zesty sound is sensational.

Jessy J will perform from 1-3 p.m. There is no extra cost beyond admission to the Festival of Arts, 650 Laguna Canyon Road.

Playhouse Opens a Bennett Tribute

The Laguna Beach Playhouse tribute to Tony Bennett, who Frank Sinatra called “the greatest singer in the world,” sounds off Saturday, July 9, at 7:30 p.m. and will feature a post-performance and champagne reception.

“I Left My Heart: A Salute to the Music of Tony Bennett” features three singers and a live on-stage jazz combo who celebrate Bennett’s career by performing more than two dozen songs all recorded by Bennett, including “Because of You,” “Stranger in Paradise,” “The Best Is Yet To Come,” “When Will The Bells Ring for Me,” “Cold, Cold Heart,” “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “The Good Life,” “Rags To Riches,” and of course, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.”

The songs are tied together with narrative that helps tell the story of Bennett’s career. For detailed show times or to purchase tickets, call The Laguna Playhouse, located at 606 Laguna Canyon Road, at 949-497-2787.
