Preparing for Disaster
September is National Disaster Preparedness month and Laguna Beach urges residents to register their contact information with AlertOC, the regional mass notification system, which can notify them of required actions during an emergency.
On Oct. 21 at 5 p.m., Laguna Beach will participate in a regional emergency test in conjunction with the Great Shake Out, an earthquake drill estimated to reach two million Orange County residents.
All Laguna Beach home phone numbers are already preregistered with the program. Citizens wishing to add their cell phones, work phones, email addresses, and TDD/TTY devices to the system can do so by logging into www.AlertOC.com
For further information, please contact AlertOC Coordinator Jordan Villwock at 949-497-0701, or via email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Expo Cultivates Garden Knowledge
The Laguna Beach County Water District is hosting its second annual SmartScape Information Expo Oct. 1 and 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 306 Third St., to promote using California native plants and efficient irrigation.
The expo offers hands-on learning opportunities and face-to-face interactions with knowledgeable landscape and irrigation professionals, says Renae Hinchey, water district general manager.
This year’s two-day event features on-site rebate opportunities for irrigation SmartTimer controllers and sprinkler nozzles and a California native plant sale. Attendees will have the opportunity to visit with the region’s gardening and irrigation gurus and learn about the latest water efficient landscape products and services. How-to demonstrations on sprinkler head retrofitting, turf removal, rainwater harvesting, container gardening, and wildlife habitat garden displays are also planned.
Hotel Laguna’s Castoffs Lather for Good
Hotel Laguna has partnered with Clean the World Global LLC of Orlando, Fla., to aid their cause reducing landfill waste and recycling soap to prevent illness.
The hotel will collect gently-used hotel soaps, shampoos, conditioners and lotions discarded by guests and ship them to Orlando for redistribution to children and families in need throughout the United States and elsewhere.
“Upon learning of the amazing work this organization is doing, I knew this was something the Hotel Laguna had to join immediately,” said the hotel’s chief operating officer, Heinz U. Hoffman.
Clean the World recycles hotel amenities at 1,100 hotel properties.
Sprinklers May Need Resetting
Due to the recent power outage, South Coast Water District recommends residents check their sprinkler timer, which may default to factory settings and water daily. With cool weather approaching, now is the time to consider cutting back on your watering schedule, the district advises. For information about resetting, check your owner’s manual or manufacturer’s website. If you’d like general sprinkler timer tips, go to scwd.org/news.
