The Diabetic Epidemic
Diabetes falls into the ranks of a dangerous terrorist arriving in strength and numbers on our shores. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates one in 10 of us currently suffer from type two diabetes and a quarter of us don’t know we have it. The CDC goes on to predict one in only three of us could have diabetes by 2050.
Diabetes is where glucose builds up in the bloodstream due to its inability to enter into the cells where it belongs. How does this happen? Insulin is a hormonal key unlocking the cell wall allowing the glucose to pass through and become fuel. Insulin in diabetics no longer opens that door, leaving high levels of glucose flowing through the blood where it can damage blood vessels of organs.
Jill Lane, a local resident and new to Laguna Beach, was recently diagnosed with type two diabetes. She had first noticed difficulties in thinking as she began to gain weight. She started to lose her balance, falling frequently. She became debilitated seemingly overnight. She became unable to make simple decisions concerning issues that used to be second nature. “I feel trapped in this body,” she admits.
In a flash of her eye, Jill went from the top real estate broker in Los Angeles and a member of Coldwell Banker’s President’s Club of top global producers to receiving a call from her children suggesting she move closer to them so they could lend her a hand. Where once she prided herself as an independent, capable woman able to provide for and protect her children, now she found herself leaning on her daughters.
Dr. Gabriel Cousens, M.D., founder of the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center, says diabetes can be resolved through a raw plant based diet and lifestyle changes. “From our approach it is curable.” Cousens exclaims. “In three weeks, 53% of type 2 diabetes are off all medication and cured. In type 1 diabetes, 30% of people are off all medication and cured.”
Finding a cure for diabetes is near and dear to my heart because Jill Lane is my mother. It is my turn now to protect her. Saying goodbye to white sugar and adding in raw living foods, green juices, clean water and exercise, we have taken our first steps on the road to taking back her life.
