Surfers ARE skaters in Laguna. Do you like the little surf village you live in? If so, there will be skateboarders. If you want to do away with the skateboarders, you will need to get rid of the surfers.
Surf culture started as a counter-culture movement. It is going back in that direction, and if the city counsel stands up as "the man" in this situation, all they are going to get from the surfer/skaters is the finger and a bunch of kids on the hills again. See the quote from Chance Gaul above.

This is a city of the arts ... surrounding activities are BECAUSE of the arts.... to designate $200,000 toward a skate park instead of supporting the artists & growing the underfunded participation in the arts is NOT what I believe money should be spent for. Consider the need for Studios & live in spaces. The Festivals FEED this town ... give back to the artists who have the reputation for bringing people to it. Revise any codes that obstruct their living or working here.

Bottom line .... skateboarding is a dangerous obstacle to avoid harming the rider & leaves the city as well as the families open for law suites. Nothing sould be allowed on these roads unless it has navigation and can easily be seen or be controlled by the driver.
I have also had my near misses where children are misbehaving & not being seen properly when on their boards riding low.

Pedestrians could also use some of the earmarked money
to make the crossings @ intersections more visible with lights in the road for crossing.

Thank you for the space to commment .

I think young Chance fails to grasp irony:
Despite the ban, pro-skateboarder Chance Gaul, 15, who showed up after the public comment period on Tuesday, said he’s undeterred. “I’m done following the rules,” he said later. “I’m skating wherever.” Gaul and others blame a small group of reckless neophytes for giving the law-abiding downhillers a bad name.

Skateboarders annoy everyone except other skateboarders or their parents. I hope they are banned elsewhere. If their parents want to build a ramp for them in the middle of nowhere, they can use their money.

I really don't think that the solution is to ban yet another street for the skateboarders. I'm not sure what the solution is but I think that the parents need to be more involved with the scofflaws. Doesn't it tell you something that 70 skateboarders and only 10 parents showed up at the Bluebird Park meeting? I see these parents drop their kids off all the time on my street (Oak), and drive away. We have a skate park in Laguna Beach..it's called Oak Street. If we could only figure out how to package that in a safer, less intrusive environment. El-Erian said she hopes the kids in Laguna move to a street with a lower grade “so that they don’t die and I’m not involved in their death.” Great El-Erian...so you want those of us who live on lower grade streets to bare the consequences. That is not a solution.
