@Laguna Beach Indy — Can you ask for the organization’s EIN? I am having trouble finding them under any iterations of their current or previous names (PRC, Inc.) on the California DOJ or IRS websites to confirm their non-profit/tax deductibility status. Yet another sign that the organization has some problems… Also, their Form 990s should be easily accessible to the public.

Very sad, because I know of many animal welfare groups who would love to have a windfall of $72,000. I think the problems with this organization go deeper than one bad apple. Nonprofit organizational structure should never allow one person access to the accounting records and books, and ongoing theft that can continue for two years demonstrates poor structural controls, lack of oversight, and lack of care with donations. And, as a side note, I’ve emailed many times about attending a volunteer training session to help out, and never get a response… The group needs some serious change.
