A Plea for Courtesy, Safety Behind the Wheel

Editor,

It is with great disappointment I write this letter regarding the complete lack of regard many motorists have for the safety of fellow motorists and pedestrians alike.

My family and I moved back to Laguna Beach after 20 years last summer, and in an effort to conserve space and lessen our carbon footprint, we use a street-legal golf cart for most of our daily transportations needs. This has made me keenly aware of the blatant disregard for speed limits and basic driver safety laws by many motorists.

We have been passed by people speeding on narrow Bluebird Canyon roads, cut off by people not stopping at four-way stops, honked at for coming to complete stops before proceeding, yelled at, given the finger and hand ringing for not jumping to speed when the light turns green.

Recently in my full-sized car I turned left onto Forest Avenue from Coast Highway on a left green arrow, when out from behind me a motorist passed and raced in front of me, nearly taking out a pedestrian, only to slow down for a parking spot a block ahead. Keep in mind I usually have two children in tow, but that doesn’t seem to change anyone’s behavior. I fear for my children’s lives now more than on any other road I’ve been on.

What’s the solution? More police? Slower speed limits? How about improved collective awareness of safety and common courtesy?
