After investigating allegations of an 11th victim, Laguna Beach police asked prosecutors last week to add additional false imprisonment and sexual battery charges to the slew of sex allegations already filed against rug merchant Saeid Boustanabadi Maralan.
Maralan, a convicted sex offender who operated the Sirous & Sons rug store in Laguna Beach, on Sept. 16 entered not guilty pleas to 11 alleged sex crimes involving multiple victims, according to court records.
The new case is under review to determine whether additional charges are appropriate, Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Walker said Tuesday.
Investigators say Maralan, who is still in custody in county jail, should face two additional charges stemming from a 2009 incident involving a 47-year-old Irvine customer, who came forward last month, police Sgt. Robert Rahaeuser said Tuesday. The alleged crimes involving the 11th victim to come forward did not occur in the store, unlike the other recent victims, said Rahaeuser, though he declined to provide further details. Though none of the victims have been identified by name, police have described the women as customers, an intern, employees and in one instance a hair stylist.
Maralan, 53, of Laguna Niguel, was required to register as a sex offender due to a conviction in Los Angeles County, court records show. He was scheduled for a court hearing on Thursday. Santa Ana defense attorney Glenn K. Osajima could not be immediately reached for comment.
