Veterans Day has been celebrated on Nov. 11 since it was first established to celebrate the end of WWI.

The Laguna Beach Police Color Guard posted the colors to start off the Veterans Day celebration hosted by the Veterans and Ladies Auxiliary of the Laguna Beach American Legion Post held at their Legion Post on Monday, Nov. 11.

Mayor Kelly Boyd, a veteran, attended the event, while Laguna Beach City Council member Steve Dicterow provided the opening remarks. Keynote speaker Veterans Administration Officer Frank Sellers highlighted the importance of making veterans and their families aware of the many benefits available and how to obtain them.

The program included presentations from representatives of the Laguna Beach police and fire departments, as well as from the Moms of Military support group and the Habitat for Humanity, which helps needy veterans get a home of their own.

The Legion Auxiliary provided refreshments, rounding out an event that proved to be a true hometown celebration with friends and family that was much appreciated by the veterans.

Veterans Day has been celebrated on Nov. 11 since it was first established to celebrate the end of WWI with the signing of the surrender of Germany in Paris, France, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.
