Art Contest Sets Out the Easel

2-plein-air-invitational-bis-roberts-2015Thirty-five contemporary landscape artists arrive in Laguna Beach this week for the 18th annual Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational, Oct. 8–16.

The first quick-draw event begins at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, on Main Beach with the artists competing to finish a plein air work within two hours. The still wet work goes up for auction at 4:30 p.m. at Seven Degrees, 891 Laguna Canyon Road.

Join the artists for a 6:30 p.m. talk Monday, Oct. 10, at Forest & Ocean Gallery, 480 Ocean Ave. Reserve a seat at LagunaPleinAir.org/2016-events to register.

This year’s artist line-up includes first-time participants Mike Hernandez of Valencia and Shelby Keefe of Milwaukee, Wisc., Gil Dellinger of Laguna Beach, and the husband and wife team, Ray Roberts and Peggi Kroll-Roberts of Angels Camp.

Ray Roberts took home last year’s top prize, the $10,000 “best in show” award for his painting “Morning at Main Beach.”

With the exception of the Collectors Gala on Friday, Oct. 14, all events over the nine days are free and open to the public and take place in town.
