Art That’s Small at City Hall
Laguna Beach’s Mayor Kelly Boyd announced the winners of the annual Art That’s Small at City Hall competition last week.
Out of 91 entries from throughout the county, first place went to Ben Desoto; second to Anthony Salvo, third to James Nordstrom; City Hall choice to Maggie Spencer; and honorable mentions were to Al Esquerra, Jennifer Griffiths, and Carolyn Machado.
The art works are on exhibit at City Hall, 505 Forest Ave. throughout April, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Gallerist JoAnne Artman, college president Jonathan Burke, and artist curator Pat Sparkuhl judged the Arts Commission competition.
Gallery Sets the Table for Designers
A two-week exhibit of functional contemporary design will transform CES Contemporary gallery into a retail showroom for a curated group of mostly California designers, including Laguna Beach’s high-end lighting maker Cerno.
A reception for “Device,” a survey of usable and useful objects, is set for Saturday, April 20, 480 Ocean Ave., from 6 to 9 p.m. The group includes award-winning emerging product designers, accessory designers, conceptual sculptors, and artists.
The opening coincides with the first Ocean Avenue Spring Soirée, where enthusiasts can view highlights from the collections of the avenue’s businesses, which specialize in art, interior and industrial design, fashion, culinary creations and distinct home products.
Art Escape for Seniors at the Susi Q
Retired high school arts instructor Peter Tiner returns to the classroom for Laguna Outreach for Community Arts, teaching photogravure and solar etching April 17 and 24 from 1-4 p.m. at the Susi Q Center, 380 Third St. $30 for both sessions
All aspects of photogravure etching and printing techniques will be covered. Each student will get 1-5” x 7” plate to etch and print. Please bring three to four images to choose from, photo prints, cell phone photos, etc.

Blue Ribbons For Winning Senior Artists
Mayor Kelly Boyd presented blue ribbons to winning artists in the 55-and-up show at a Susi Q Center reception last week.
An estimated 75 guests enjoyed refreshments and a chance to vote for their favorites in several categories.
Visitors to 380 Third St. can view all of the work that is featured throughout the venue, through May 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Selected pieces are available for sale.
