Boys Basketball ( W 3, L 2)

The boys completed the Godinez Grizzly tournament, winning three straight before dropping their last contest to Huntington Beach.

On Nov. 30, Laguna easily defeated Orangewood Academy 48-37, building their lead off a hot 12-3 run to open the contest. Blake Burzell scored 20 and Adam Armstrong added 12 against the Spartans.

The follow day, Laguna won their first encounter ever with Segerstrom, blasting the Jaguars (3-4) 77-34. Breakers led 46-13 at the half and were never threatened. Burzell hit for 32 points, Grady Morgan had 16.

On Friday, Dec. 2, Laguna faced off against San Clemente for the 53rd time and pulled out a 57-51 victory over the Tritons, who still hold a 34-19 series advantage since moving to their current site in 1964. Breakers had dominated the series with the predecessor San Juan Capistrano High School (1935-1963) 45-14. Burzell scored 24, Morgan added 22, Armstrong eight and Charlie Rounaghi chipped in three to round out the Laguna scoring against San Clemente.

In the final game, Huntington Beach rallied to defeat Laguna 64-57 on Saturday at Godinez. Burzell had most of the Breaker scoring with 31 points followed by Morgan with nine. Breakers lost the lead in the second period and were down nearly 18 points before staging a fourth quarter rally. Oilers still dominate the all-time series 27-5.

 

This past week, Breakers were to play a pair of non-conference home games with Dana Hills on Wednesday, Dec. 7, and Irvine this Friday, Dec. 9. Next week the squad will be in the Westminster tournament then resume play on Dec. 22 with Woodbridge at the North/South Challenge day at El Toro.

 

Girls Basketball (0-1)

Season opened last Thursday, Dec. 1, with a 39-14 loss to Capistrano Valley. Laura Nolan led the home squad with nine points. The squad was in the 19th annual Glenn/Norwalk Tournament this week opening on Wednesday, Dec, 7, with Rolling Hills Prep at Norwalk High. Breakers are in the Tustin Tournament Dec. 12-17 and the Santiago/Garden Grove tournament the following week Dec. 19-22.
