Boys Basketball (15-5, 3-0)

Breakers made it three straight with a pair of conference wins and a non-league victory this past week. On Friday, Jan. 15, in Laguna’s first home game of the season, Breakers crushed Saddleback 78-27 for the largest margin of victory (51) in the school’s 82-season hoop history. The squad also collected 13 3-point baskets tying the school record set in 1991 against Costa Mesa.

On Jan. 13, Laguna made it 24 straight wins over Costa Mesa (9-11, 2-1) with a 60-51 win at their gym. Blake Burzell hit for 17 while Darin Richardson and Nick Rahder each added 12.

This past Monday, Jan. 18, Laguna defeated California from Whittier 77-44 as the Condors never threatened in the contest played at Estancia as part of an MLK basketball showcase. Burzell scored 17, Richardson 16 and Rahdar 11. Isaac Wulff and Charlie Rounaghi added nine each while Karim Jones chipped in eight points.

The next key home games with league playoff contenders tip off at 7 p.m. in Dugger Gym Friday, Jan. 29 against Godinez and Wednesday, Feb. 3 with Costa Mesa.

Girls Basketball (12-7, 3-1)

Estancia showed why they captured four of the past five league crowns with a 53-43 win over Laguna this past Tuesday, Jan. 19, at Dugger Gym. Breakers were close much of the night, but could not control the momentum down the stretch. Alexandra Lewis scored 15 points including five 3-point shots while Jackie Cenan added 14 to lead the Breakers.

Last week Laguna defeated Costa Mesa 55-29 and Saddleback 65-28 to set up the showdown with league leader Estancia.
