Bombings in Brussels

Editor,

My good friend and neighbor, Bill S., travels to Brussels every six weeks for business. As soon as I heard the news about last week’s bombings, I called to see if he was okay. Thankfully, he was in Boston, not Europe.

Not surprisingly, Bill told me, “Denny, I know exactly where the bombs went off.  I’ve been in that terminal and on that subway many times.”

What did surprise me was the reaction to the terror here at home. Here’s what former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani told Fox News, “It’s outrageous that the president of the United States is not in the Situation Room right now planning to destroy ISIS.”

My guess is President Obama had many conversations with top U.S. intelligence people the day of the bombings (some of whom have access to the Situation Room).  Various world leaders – including Great Britain’s David Cameron, France’s Francois Hollande, Germany’s Angela Merkel and Russia’s Vladimir Putin – expressed their sorrow and concern in speeches and tweets.

So take a breath, Rudy. Barack Obama did what many foreign leaders did – only it was from Cuba, not Washington.
