Breakers Advance to CIF Semi’s

Laguna rallied to revenge last year’s loss to long-time rival Garden Grove with an 11-7 victory this past Monday, May 18, at the Argonaut’s campus in the Division 4 quarterfinals. Breakers were down 4-2 after the first round of sets and rallied as the No. 2 singles player Tristan Krogius and No. 3 singles player Stuart Webb won their final two sets with Krogius winning 6-4, 6-1 and Webb 7-5 and 6-2.

In doubles, Ryan Gee and Hayden Seitz swept their opponents 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. It took a Laguna sweep of the third round to seal the win as Charles Keller won at singles and the Breakers second and third doubles teams pulled out wins.

Laguna traveled to Rowland (17-2) this past Wednesday, May 20, and a victory would put them into the finals that were held on Friday, May 22, at the Claremont Club in Claremont. Breakers last trip to the championship was in 2011 and their last title was in 1982. Laguna’s record is 7-7 in their previous 14 semifinal appearances.

Last week Laguna opened the playoffs with a pair of 17-1 wins defeating Segerstrom on May 13 and Quartz Hill on May 16 both on the local courts.
