Seeded 17th, Laguna finished 15th in the 32-team South Coast Championships held last week at four pools in three cities. On Thursday at Newport Harbor, Laguna surprised No. 16 seed Villa Park 12-7 as Sebastian Jacobs scored four goals while Jeff Rubino and Jakob Colliday each added three.

Gordon Pike was credited with 13 saves. In the nightcap, eventual champion Mater Dei won 18-7.

On Friday, Laguna lost at Newport 14-9 and suffered another one-goal loss to El Toro on Saturday at Corona del Mar by 10-9 score. In their final game, Laguna defeated Los Alamitos 10-9.

This past week Laguna faced Costa Mesa in the opening of league play on Wednesday, Sept. 30, and traveled to Santiago Canyon College on Thursday, Oct. 1 to meet Orange Lutheran. This Saturday Laguna has a key division seeding matchup at Murrieta Valley. In Orange Coast action, Laguna has won nine consecutive league titles and carry a 45-match conference win streak into this season. Individual statistics can be found on Max Preps.

Breakers lower level teams are off to success, too, with the JV holding wins over El Toro, Mira Costa and Harvard Westlake while the frosh-soph squad is 4-1 with wins over Dana, CdM, Huntington and El Toro. The team’s only set back a 6-5 loss to San Clemente.
