Boys Water Polo (19-12, 4-0)

Laguna battled the eventual champion Agoura Chargers (26-4) to their opponent’s toughest match with a division team this season in a contest played last Wednesday, Nov. 20 at Irvine’s Woollett Center. A large turnout of Laguna fans saw Jakob Colladay open the scoring at the 3:25 mark in the first period with a score but Agoura quickly countered as Spencer Farrar tied the game with his first of four goals. Farrar’s second goal came with 35 seconds remaining in the first period as the teams battled to even get a shot attempt.  The Chargers got going in the second period to extend their lead to 5-1 before Cade Baldridge scored in the final seconds of the first half.

Laguna came out strong in the second half pulling within one point at the period’s midpoint on scores by Baldridge and Jack Dodson. Agoura added their sixth at 2:06 in the period with the teams continuing to trade possessions until the Breakers allowed a goal in their own cage as a pass back to the keeper went wild, giving the Chargers a 7-4 advantage. Still the Breakers did not give up as Baldridge scored on a penalty shot at 1:33 in the fourth period with Aki Anderson scoring with just over a minute left to pull Laguna within one. Agoura added their final score with less than a minute remaining.

The 2014 Breakers will be solid with five returning all-league players plus Garrett Hartley in the cage. The other top division teams lose their firepower to graduation so Laguna should compete for top honors. Coach Ethan Damato (Laguna ’00) is now 131-57 in six seasons at the helm with two CIF titles, four CIF semifinal finishes, and six league titles.
