The Laguna water polo team rolled past Saddleback 26-8 last Wednesday, Jan. 21 at the local pool as the fearless Roadrunner shooters (14-8, 1-1) tallied eight goals against the Laguna defense. Makenzie Fischer fed Mia Salvini for the Breakers first goal on the first possession and the squad scored 13 in the initial period, one short of the school and Southern Section record of 14 set in 2010. Breakers practiced a number of six-on-five defense opportunities as 11 exclusions were called on Laguna in the second half so the squad could work on their power play defense.

The winning tally of 26 goals was one short of the school record as was the 34 combined goals for a contest. The record was set last season in a 27-8 win at Saddleback. Breakers have won 38 consecutive games, second longest in Orange County history and are on a 34 consecutive league win streak that started back in 2006.

This past week the Breakers traveled to Estancia (4-11, 0-1) on Wednesday for a league contest and met sixth-ranked Division 1 San Marcos in a “home” non-league match held at the full-size Corona del Mar pool on Friday, Jan. 30. The team hosts sixth-ranked Division 2 Los Osos at the local pool at noon on Saturday, Jan. 31. Admission is free.

Next week the Breakers will participate in the 20th Annual Southern California Championships at the Woollett Center adjacent to Irvine High School for the most challenging games remaining for the regular season. Preliminary matches are on Thursday and Friday with the finals on Saturday, Feb. 7. Foothill, Newport, and Corona del Mar join the Breakers as the top seeded teams.
