Laguna opened their 40th season of boys volleyball this past Tuesday with an impressive 25-17, 25-19, 25-16 sweep of Huntington Beach’s Edison High, ranked seventh in the county and eighth in the Southern Section CIF Division-I poll.

Breakers were led by Robbie McKnight with 12 kills and Alek Burk with 10. Alex Bekken and Jack Winn shared the setting duties with nine assists for Bekken and 18 for Winn. Colin Ceithaml added five blocks while Troy Donenfeld led all defensive players with eight digs. Also contributing were Ethan Morris with five kills, Max McCarter with two kills and two blocks, and Weston Barnes with eight kills.

Breakers are the top seed in the 25th annual Foothill tournament this weekend. Breakers will have pool play today, Friday, March 4, at Irvine’s Beckman High School facing Norco, Laguna Hills, and West Valley/Hemet. Mater Dei, Los Alamitos, and Dana Hills will be Laguna’s  biggest challengers in the event. Playoffs begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 5, at Beckman.

The Breaker JV squad looks like they will be among the best in county, winning their opener by crushing Edison 25-15, 25-9.
