Editor,

This coming Sunday, Oct 5, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., CICLAVIA is happening again in Los Angles on a six-mile section of a car-free Wilshire Boulevard. This is the 50th year for CICLAVIA, which started in 2010 with one event. www.ciclavia.org/

Last year CICLAVIA happened three times because of local and regional demand. About 50,000 people participate. Modes of transport are walking, baby buggies, tricycles, dog paws, roller skates, and of course bikes. This event is focused on going slow and having fun.

A fun way, and the most practical way, to get there is to go to the Irvine train station, take METROLINK <http://www.metrolinktrains.com/> as Amtrak is way more expensive. It is a common practice for bike rider to place their bike on the train. See you there.

P.S. could our town do something like this as a charity event?

  1. At the turn of the century our city streets and boulevards were a public place accessible to all modes of transport and a community meeting place as this scene from 1907 Detroit shows. http://lagunastreets.blogspot.com/2013/12/traffic-before-automobile-high-res-b.html With the popularity of the motorcar the roadway became the exclusive territory of the motorist. Adding traffic lanes in the 1940’s was the final blow to non-motorized traffic. Bicyclists and carriages still have legal roadway access but roadway design includes motorists to the exclusion of all others. The purpose of CicLAVia is to re-introduce public streets to people as a community resource. Benefits to the community are reduced traffic congestion, reduced noise, pollution and to stimulate commerce by encouraging foot traffic. Google Complete Streets Policy.
