Canyon Resident Opposes Homeless Housing

Editor,

As a resident of the Canyon, I can tell you that the alternative living shelter as presented [poses] more than enough problems to residents here in the Canyon. We’ve had random homeless /mentally ill folks wander up into our neighborhoods, sleeping on our yards, drugged, defecating in the streets, yelling at residents and the worse offense – smoking in the open space, which should be concern for all residents. I think we’ve endured enough as it is, and can’t fathom how much worse the situation could be with this proposed expansion.

If another area in the city was considered for this project, say Emerald Bay, Top of the World, or another neighborhood such as Woods Cove, I’m sure the neighbors would be up in arms.

It seems that many non-canyon Laguna residents have a case of NIMBY, and are quick to find alternative solutions, which won’t affect their neighborhoods. The Canyon has too often been treated as the red-headed stepchild of our city and we are standing up to say enough is enough.

I just thought I’d let you know that many of the residents here in the canyon are going to fight this project.

We are not cold hearted people. We give to charities which help those in need, but like you and others who don’t live in the Canyon, don’t want to deal with having to worry about our kids, wives, property or safety.

I urge you to reconsider endorsing this project.
