School Offers Lessons in Parenting

The school district is offering a seven-week program designed to assist parents with young children age 5 to 10 on Thursday nights from 6:30–9:30 p.m.

The Loving Solutions sessions will be facilitated by family therapist Laura Rivas and begin Thursday, Oct. 10 at the Susi Q Senior Center, 380 Third St.

Also available beginning Nov. 19 are 90-minute drop-in classes in the same location for parents needing support who cannot commit to an ongoing parent class.

“Developing our skills is something all of us can benefit from as parents,” said student services director Irene White

Pre-register with El Morro Elementary counselor Jami Parsons, at (949) 497-7780 or by email [email protected].

Navigating a Path to College

The high school’s annual College Round Up sets up in Dugger Gym on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. More than a 100 representatives of colleges, universities, military institutions and test prep companies from around the country plan to participate.

The Round Up provides an opportunity for students and their families to explore post-secondary options before visiting college campuses. Information about admission requirements, housing, areas of study, athletics, financial aid and more is available to help students make informed decisions for the future.

New this year for parents and students are breakout sessions scheduled for 5:30 p.m., also at LBHS. Revolution Test Prep will host a workshop on college admissions tests in the theatre and David Stoeckel will describe athletic recruiting in the library.

Real World Lessons Return to School

Twenty-three speakers, who represent an array of career opportunities, will participate this week in a career day at Thurston Middle School.

Presentations will include examples of the career options in today’s global economy. Speakers include artist Peter Tiner, radio DJ and entrepreneur Tyler Russell, professional surfers Ian and Alisa Cairns, pilot and NASA researcher Michael Moore, and environmentalist Winter Bonnin.

Seventh and eighth-grade students will have the opportunity to attend three presentations, where each speaker will describe their education, professional background and career influences.

The stories will inspire students to follow their dreams, said Thurston counselor Nance Morrissey. “Dreams come from circuitous routes and, each year the speakers prove that success is a curious combination of experiences, coincidences, hard work, and passion.”
