Rotary Awards an Artist
Haru Agnes Urushido was honored as the April student of the month by Laguna Rotary Club.
Haru’s recognition stems from her creativity in the Laguna Beach High School visual arts department. She is a prize winner in a a Japan high school art and craft competition and the local Color It Orange exhibit.
Haru also participates in high school theater as a member of Hyakunin-Isshu, a poetry and poets club.
She hopes to attend the San Francisco Art Institute after graduation.
Write an Essay, Fly a Plane
The local 99s Women Pilots chapter is offering free flying lessons to the winner of its essay writing contest on why people want to learn to fly.
Entrants must be between 14 and 18 and the deadline to submit is Sunday, May 15. Submit by email to [email protected], or by snail mail to P.O. Box 6030, San Clemente, CA. 92674.
Ten winners will be selected by a judging panel of women pilots in the OC99. Entries will be judged first on content, then on quality and neatness.
LCAD Gains a Partner
A Laguna College of Art and Design student has a chance at a new leadership-training experience thanks to the Laguna Beach branch of the American Association of University Women.
The chapter awarded LCAD sophomore Alexis Lanz a scholarship to attend the National Conference for College Women Students taking place in Maryland in June.
Lanz, of San Diego, is studying design and digital media and serves as the program’s student government representative.
Since 2008, AAUW-LB has annually awarded LCAD students with academic scholarships.
