A bicyclist died after colliding with a minivan on Newport Beach’s East Coast Highway earlier this week, police reported Wednesday.

Debra H. Deem, 58, of Laguna Beach was riding her bicycle westbound on Pacific Coast Highway on Tuesday afternoon, Newport Beach Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella explained in a statement.

A white minivan collided with the bicyclist just east of Newport Coast Drive, emergency responders reported.

The minivan was also westbound, Newport Beach Fire Department Captain Brett Sutherland said in a statement released by NBFD on Tuesday.

Police were notified of the collision around 4:27 p.m. on Tuesday, according to authorities.

Deem sustained major head trauma and paramedics from the Newport Beach Fire Department transported her in critical condition to Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach, where she died on Wednesday as a result of her injuries, the statement explains.

She was wearing a helmet, Manzella said.

The cause of the collision is under investigation.
