Gains In The War Against Dementia

Dr. Frank LaFerla, Director of the UC Irvine’s Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders, offered new hope in medicine’s  battle to tame Alzheimer’s disease.

At a recent AAUW-LB and Woman’s Club lecture, Dr. LaFerla described that by injecting human neural stem cells into laboratory animals, the institute has developed the first animal model to successfully reverse memory losses and demented behavior of mice with Alzheimer’s. He says human studies are possible in five years. “Researching ways to make memories last a lifetime” is within reach, he said.

Alzheimer’s disease is the leading cause of dementia among the elderly; there are 60,000 cases in Orange County alone. Several clinical trials are currently underway at the institute, the state’s only federal designated Alzheimer’s Disease Research and Diagnostic Center.
