Donations Needed for Back-to-School Party
The Woman’s Club and other local organizations are hustling together school supplies to ensure that 65 local students receive the tools needed for success in the classroom at a distribution party Saturday, Aug. 20.
Contributors can drop off supplies from 9 a.m. to noon at No Square Theater, 384 Legion St., prior to the 1 p.m. event.
AAUW contributed $500 to help with purchasing pencils, pens, paper,and binders. Each students receives $25 worth of supplies. More donations are needed to reach the goal. Checks annotated “Back to School” may be sent to The Woman’s Club, 286 St. Ann’s Drive, Laguna Beach, 92651.

Benefit Seeks Storage Space
A clean garage, unused retail or warehouse space is needed to store donated clothing for the upcoming fifth annual Boutique Benefit, slated for Sept. 17 in the Laguna Presbyterian Church.
Organizers also could use small moving boxes for the effort, whose proceeds support the Laguna Resource & Relief Center in Laguna Canyon.

Garden Lectures Uprooted for a New Plot
The Laguna Beach Garden Club monthly meetings are moving to a new location beginning Sept. 9. After meeting for more than 60 years at the Neighborhood Congregational Church, the club will relocate the Laguna Presbyterian Church to take advantage of its improvements.
Program chair Patricia Weier says newly refurbished Tankersley Hall will improve everyone’s ability to see and hear the speakers.
This year’s topics include how to design and install a succulent bed, native bees and other pollinators, vertical gardening, and a certified “geraniac” who will offer new varieties of geraniums for sale.
Monthly meetings begin at 9:30 a.m. and are on the second Friday of the month, September through May. The club also sponsors field trips to botanical gardens and specialty nurseries, and assists maintaining the Hortense Miller garden.
Even if you don’t know an aphid from a zinnia, you are welcome to join the club and meet people who share an interest in gardening, promoter Nancy England said.
Wells Fargo Donates to Marine Mammal Center
Pacific Marine Mammal Center received a $15,000 grant this week from Wells Fargo Foundation to support animal medical care.
The Laguna Canyon center rehabilitates over 200 marine mammals annually and offers many seals and sea lions a second chance to return to the ocean, at a cost of $600,000 annually. The center is entirely dependent on public support.
The bank foundation’s “unrestricted contributions make it possible for us to put funds towards our greatest need, and allow us to continue saving the lives of our patients,” said development director Melissa Sciacca.
“At Wells Fargo, we strive to make environmental stewardship a natural part of who we are and how we think,” said Bao-Ngoc Liu, south coast district manager for Wells Fargo. “It’s great knowing that our financial support gives more marine mammals a second chance!”
Wyland Sponsors Ocean Event
A special presentation by wildlife painter Wyland and oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle, entitled, “Oceans: The Next Ten Years,” will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15 at the Ocean Institute at 24200 Dana Point Harbor Drive in Dana Point.
Earle, a former chief scientist for NOAA, maintains that the actions we take in the next 10 years will affect the health of the oceans for the next 10,000 years. Join other special guests including comedian Jon Lovitz and author Mark Victor Hansen and a special live musical performance by the Wyland Blues Planet Band featuring Nick Hernandez.
