Planning and Growing a Winter Garden

Garden designer Cristin Fusano will be presenting her suggestions for winter gardening on Saturday, Oct. 19, 10 a.m., at the South Laguna Community Garden, Eagle Rock Way and Coast Highway.

 

Stepping Inside Stem Cell Research

Gain eye-opening insights on developments in stem cell research and how it works in the human body in a community lecture from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct 12 at the Susi Q Senior Center.

Participants will hear from Dr. Aileen Anderson, of UC Irvine’s Bill and Sue Gross Stem Cell Research Center.

Her research promises advancements in Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and macular degeneration.

 

Biz Club Discusses the Affordable Care Act

The Affordable Care Act will be discussed by healthcare benefits expert Tim Zanderbergen at the Laguna Beach Business Club at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17.

Club meetings begin with a buffet breakfast and brief networking roundtable. Meetings are hosted at the Hotel Laguna. Non-members are welcome.

Honoring Club’s Nine Decades and Senior Members 

Woman’s Club will celebrate its 90th anniversary and honor our members who have also reached 90 fabulous years of age on Sunday, Oct. 20.

The Women of Distinction are Gigi Blount, Louise Buckley, Beverly Hine and Jean Raun, who have each been long time supporters and volunteers for numerous community causes.

The public is invited to the 1-4 p.m. high tea, though other beverages will be served along with tea sandwiches and special desserts. The cost is $15 for club members and a guest; $10 for additional guests or non-members. RSVPs are requested by Oct. 18.

Contests for the prettiest and funniest cup and pot are planned. There will be a special auction of donated sterling and silver plated serving pieces with proceeds benefitting the club. Anyone wishing to donate silver pieces should call 949-494-8821 or bring them with you.

 

Tutors Needed for Student Learning Club

The Learning Club is seeking volunteers to help tutor El Morro students during the school year.

The Learning Club , sponsored by The American Association of University Women, Laguna Beach branch, operates Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from October through May. Local adults and teens are welcome to apply; no experience necessary. Training is provided.

Volunteer English Teachers Wanted

The Cross-cultural Council, which runs the Day Worker Center and La Playa Center, began its English-as-a-second-language classes, but is still looking for volunteers, who need only know English to assist.

Classes begin at 9:15 a.m. at the Boys and Girls Club, 1085 Laguna Canyon Rd., with three levels of classes on Mondays through Thursdays. Everyone who wants to learn English is welcome.

Public Hearing Over Airport’s Environmental Review 

The public is invited to a scoping meeting about John Wayne Airport’s environmental review process Thursday, Oct. 17, from 6-8 p.m. in the administrative offices, 3160 Airway Ave., Costa Mesa.

Airport staff and EIR consultant BonTerra will be present to receive comments.
