Cross Country Runners Shine at Woodbridge

Laguna Beach High School boys and girls cross country teams took first place in the Division IV novice races at the 34th Annual Woodbridge Cross Country Classic last Friday, Sept. 19, at the Great Park in Irvine. The freshman boys came away with a third place finish.

On the same course under the lights on Saturday night, Laguna senior Cameron Zuziak ran a 15:02 to place 55th out of 182 runners across all divisions at the invitation-only Doug Speck Sweepstakes Race. It was a personal record for Zuziak, and the third fastest time in school history for three miles.

The rest of Laguna’s varsity runners had the week off after a successful trip to Minnesota last week for the Lucky Lindy Invitational, where the girls finished first and the boys second.

Laguna entered 43 runners (21 girls and 23 boys) in the Division IV novice races, with five from each squad finishing in the top 10. Sophomore Sabrina Flagstad ran a 21:34 to take third overall out of 503 runners. The other four were senior Paige Vitolo (4th, 21:45), sophomores Callista Helms (6th, 22:20) and Elie Glade (7th, 22:24) and freshman Natalia Szeibert (10th, 22:47).

Sophomore Sam Dameshek led the way for the novice boys, finishing third overall out of 300 runners with a time of 17:60. The other four were sophomore Ryan Whitlock (4th, 18:22), junior Brody Seebass (8th, 18:51) and sophomores William Kramer (9th, 18:59) and Liam Duncan (10th 19:02).

Dylan Miller and Luc La Montagne finished .01 seconds apart to lead the freshman boys. Miller finishing 16th in 17:35.01 and La Montagne finished 17th in 17:35.02 out of 249 runners. Lucidi Massimo finished 20th with a time of 17:39. Timothy Laughlin (61st, 18:52) and Luke Colburn (65th, 18:58) completed the scoring five. Alex Bonnin (88th, 19:22) and Guy Thomas (122nd, 19:52) finished sixth and seventh respectively.
