Holiday Décor Boutique Rings Up School Benefits

The fall boutique and silent auction at Laguna Beach United Methodist Church will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, along with a bake sale. On Sunday, Nov. 8, enjoy hot dogs and chili while shopping from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The boutique will offer hand-crafted gifts, holiday decorations, recycled clothing, housewares and more. A silent auction features vacation stays, Asian cooking lessons, boat rides and concert tickets.

Proceeds benefit eight local organizations plus schools in Africa and Nicaragua.

Topher Delaney will present Beneficence in Beauty: The Nature of Generosity at Laguna Beach Garden Club meeting on Friday, Nov.13, at Laguna Presbyterian Church, 415 Forest Ave. Registration and social hour begins at 9:30 a.m.

Delaney, a San Francisco landscape architect, will discuss the relationship between gardens and art. She has designed gardens at the Portland Art Museum, San Diego Children’s Hospital and USC Norris Cancer Research Center.

On Dec. 11 the garden club will host Chipper Wichman, chief executive of the National Tropical Botanical Garden.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

A Look At The Heroes

A free presentation of highlights from the eco-heroes film documentary about environmental activism in Laguna Beach will take place from 2-4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17, at the Susi Q Center, 380 Third St.

The program will also include a showing of “Women Transforming Media,” co-produced by Laguna Beach High School student Xenia Shin. The blog and film was supported by a two-year grant awarded by the Laguna Beach chapter of the American Association of University Women.

Jeanne Meyers, Wendy Milette and Victoria Murphy will discuss the history of My Hero, which created the eco-hero documentary.

The public is invited to the Molly Wood Garden Design pop-up shop from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12, 1290 N. Coast Highway, for shopping, and refreshments.

Expect living arrangements, furnishings, hard-to-find plants, and one-of-a-kind treasures.

Wood learned the business at Laguna Nursery before starting her own landscape design business in 1995 and opening a showroom in 2008 in Costa Mesa.

Custom orders and gift-wrapping will be available at the Laguna pop-up shop. The grand opening will benefit the Laguna Beach Boys & Girls Club.

The Ebell Club hosts an open house reception for prospective members among Laguna Beach women from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov 8.

Ebell raises funds to support local organizations. Each year they sponsor a Laguna Beach Little League team, award four $1,000 scholarships and donate to other organizations.

Playhouse Lifts the Curtain on its 95th Season

The Laguna Playhouse will host its main fundraising gala at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Island Hotel, 690 Newport Center Dr., in Newport Beach.

Gala co-chairs Melinda Masson and Barbara MacGillivray have arranged entertainment by Matt Walker (“Troubie” the clown), a dance performance and performer Logan Farine along with live and silent auctions.

Tickets for the gala including cocktail reception, dinner and dancing begin at $5,000 for a table of eight.

 

Laguna Beach is Open for Business

Planning commissioners Ken Sadler and Roger McErlane, representatives from the Laguna Beach Chamber of Commerce and Ann Larson, assistant director of community development, host an Open for Business workshop at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12 at the Laguna Beach Community Center, 380 Third St.

“Our goal is to be proactive in attracting new business to Laguna Beach and these workshops are designed to educate new business owners and help smooth the process for getting the doors open with the least amount of red tape and delay,” said Mayor Bob Whalen.

Laguna Beach High School student musicians introduced their instruments to members of the Boys and Girls Club giving them an opportunity to hear, touch and play instruments.

The annual musical petting zoo last month was sponsored by Laguna Beach Live!

After exploring the violin, baritone saxophone, trombone, clarinet, and trumpet, some young club members rushed to get their own school instruments to demonstrate for their peers.

The Loma Terrace Sewer Relocation Project is underway, which impacts street parking along Forest and Third Street to accommodate construction equipment.

Brush Clearance Begins in Nyes, Oro Canyon

Contractors are at work trimming dead and non-native vegetation in the Nyes/Oro Canyon area.

Workers managed by the Laguna Canyon Foundation will continue through early January to remove 50 percent of the dead vegetation within 100 feet of homes.
