Determined friends of Sandra Woodard are not giving up hope. Using donated frequent flyer miles, the Laguna Beach mother suffering from a rare form of ovarian cancer arrived this week at the Hufeland Klinik in Bad Mergentheim, near Frankfurt, Germany, for holistic cancer treatments, according to a friend.

“It will be a few days before the doctors choose her exact treatment,” said Katrina Martino, owner of The Hudson Salon and Spa in Laguna Beach, who began a gofundme campaign in May to help her friend and employee. The online campaign has raised just $11,000 toward the goal of $200,000.

Woodard, 54, was diagnosed in January. Since then, the Thurston Middle School community where her twin 13-year old daughters are students and her church have been a support to the single mother, Martino said, but now “her oncologist cannot do anything but make her comfortable.”

Friends and Woodard’s family continue to pursue medical help though. They’ve turned to the clinic founded the clinic in 1985 by Dr. Wolfgang Woeppel. Today, it continues under the direction of his wife and daughter. Its cancer treatments focus on tumors, but also on the overall health of the patient. Its holistic and conventional therapies are designed to stimulate the immune system so the body can heal itself, says the clinic’s website.

Woodard, who was accompanied by her brother to Germany, said in an email “I am overwhelmed by the kindness of the Laguna community. It truly touches my heart – the daily emails, texts and calls of encouragement I receive. I wish I had the words to express my profound gratitude. My family and I thank you Laguna Beach, from the bottom of our hearts. ”
