The town’s Fire Department history, which includes the county’s oldest operating fire station, is the focus of a Laguna Beach Historical Society talk at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 26. The public is welcome at the free presentation.

Division Chief Api Weinert, on the force during the 1993 firestorm, will discuss fire service history nationally and in Laguna Beach.

Fire Station One, part of City Hall, was built in 1931 and is the oldest operating fire station in Orange County, says a society announcement. Firefighters protect the city from three other stations in town, in midtown, Top of the World, and South Laguna.

Weinert is also currently an instructor at Rancho Santiago College and a manager for Orange County Lifeguards.

Nonprofit Receives Major Gift

Andy Leaf, who runs the local nonprofit The Seed Business Network, received an unexpected and welcomed surprise of $13,000 from Sue Oglel of Riviera Production last week.

SBN provides educational and charitable assistance to people with disabilities, especially disabled veterans, who are starting up, or who are already running, a small business.

Leaf, himself a parapalegic, has been fundraising in recent weeks to purchase a much-needed vehicle for his medical and business needs. “I never expected to receive such a generous donation from somebody that I did not even know,” he said in a statement.
