Laguna Beach High School’s drama program presents two musicals this month beginning Nov. 4 with Disney’s “Aladdin,” an adaptation of the popular animated movie.

Steven Sondheim’s Tony Award-winning “Into the Woods” begins its run on Nov. 11 and continues for two weekends, closing Nov. 20.

“For the last few years we have been presenting two shows in the fall,” explained Mark Dressler, producer of both shows. “Even though we are probably the smallest public high

school in Orange County, we have so many kids that have committed themselves to our drama program that we have decided to present more plays to accommodate their talents.”

Witch Makenna Zur Schmiede, center, threatens the baker and his wife, Elan Kramer, right, and Chandler Davis.

To be staged in Thurston Middle School’s Black Box Theatre, “Aladdin” promises to entertain audiences of all ages with its plot hinging upon a poor boy that uses a magic lamp to make his dreams come true.

“Into the Woods” weaves characters from a combination of famous fairy tales into a story. Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Rapunzel, the Big Bad

Wolf, Prince Charming and many more famous characters are cleverly combined in a story that reminds its audience of important life values.

“It is definitely the most challenging piece of theatre we could attempt,” said Tracey Bonner, who directs. Audiences will appreciate the play’s theme, reminding us to listen to our souls for the important answers in life, she said.
