Laguna Beach police arrested four drivers for suspicion of driving while intoxicated at a late-night DUI checkpoint near Crescent Bay Drive last Friday, the first local checkpoint in more than a year.

More than 600 vehicles were stopped and the licenses of drivers checked in the 1500 block of N. Coast Highway between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m., said Lt. Jeff Calvert.

Police say they establish checkpoints in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence as well as providing for the greatest safety for officers and the public.

Five other drivers were cited or arrested for operating a vehicle with a suspended license and two others arrested for other criminal charges, said Calvert, adding that the department plans saturation patrols in January.
