Fall Sports Update

Girls Golf (6-6, 6-10)

Breakers finished the season tied with Calvary for second place. Jackie McMahon advanced to qualify for the Southern Section CIF individual playoffs that were played last Wednesday in Long Beach.

 

Girls Tennis (10-0, 14-5)

Laguna completed another undefeated league season sweeping Costa Mesa on Thursday, Oct. 18, 16-2 and Calvary Chapel (13-6, 8-2) 16-2 on Friday, Oct. 19. Breakers won their seventh straight league crown and now have a 71 straight league match win streak dating back to their last league loss on Sept. 29, 2005. The league individual tournament was this past week and team playoffs begin next week with the Breakers hosting opening round action next Wednesday.

Boys Water Polo (4-0, 13-7)

Laguna saw their nine game win streak snapped with a 6-4 loss to Damien last Friday, Oct. 19 at the pool on the Pomona College campus. Laguna saw an early lead vanish in a lackluster performance against the inspired Spartans from the La Verne-based school. Camron Hauer scored two goals with the others coming from Caleb Scott and Riley Thomas. Breakers had their showdown for the league title this past Wednesday with Costa Mesa and are in the Steve Pal Tournament this weekend. The regular season concludes next week against El Toro (No. 4 OC, No. 8 in D-1) and Aliso Niguel.

Girls Volleyball (8-0, 14-5)

Breakers continue to roll through the Orange Coast League sweeping the third place Estancia 25-15, 25-12, 25-21 on Tuesday, Oct. 16 then sweeping second place Calvary Chapel in their gym, 25-18, 25-14, 25-13 on Thursday, Oct. 18. The Calvary victory marked Laguna’s 68th straight league match win extending their consecutive set streak to 93 in a row. Breakers closed out league play this past week with Godinez (3-5, 9-9) and Costa Mesa (1-7, 4-14). A number of players are nursing injuries and may rest this week. The regular season concludes next Tuesday, Oct. 30,  6 p.m. when the Breakers travel to South Coast League champs Dana Hills (No. 5 OC, No. 10 DI-AA) for a tune-up for post season play and a chance to improve on their county, section, and state rankings.

Breakers have qualified for their 39th trip to the playoffs and have captured their 34th league crown. 2012 marks their eighth straight title.

 

Cross Country:

Boys and girls Division 4 teams participated in the three-mile Mt. San Antonio College Invitational on Oct. 19.

Varsity boys placed fifth of 22 schools in their sweepstakes race: with the top finishers, Jack Crawford  (16:13), Grant Barton  (16:22), Mitch Kimball   (16:51), Casey Koprowski  (16:55), Veda Rebollar  (17:13), Stone Riff  (17:38) and

Cameron Zuziak  (17:39).

Varsity girls placed eighth of 18 schools: Janie Crawford (19:53), Livie Clark (19:56), Natalie Kimball (20:31), Carlee Ressler (20:36), Eliza Romero (20:49) and Brenna Merchant (20:51).

 

FALL Post-Season schedule (Team playoffs are single elimination)

Cross Country

League finals on Oct. 31 @ Centennial Park, Santa Ana; Southern Section CIF Finals, Nov 17 @ Mt SAC; State Meet, Nov 24 @ Woodward Park, Fresno

 

Football

16-team Southern Division pairings announced Nov. 4. Games are Friday, Laguna should host round 1 on Nov. 9. Finals are Saturday, Dec. 1.

Subsequent matches are Sat Nov 10, Wed Nov 14, Finals Sat Nov 17 2:45PM Woollett Center, Irvine HS.
