Fending Off Coyotes

Editor,

Some people are fearful of coyote attack so they are suggesting trapping and shooting them (“Hunters Summoned to Target Coyotes,” Aug. 5).

Too often the solution is to remove the wild out of wilderness. For a change, how about following the motto: “Be Prepared.”

“The opposite of education is fear,” Bucky Fuller. Another quote please, “The culture as a whole, and most of its members, are driven by a death urge, an urge to destroy life, which is insanity,” Derrick Jensen.

I suggest to those fearful of coyotes that they stop using “retractable” leashes with pets and carry a big stick.

  1. I agree with Terry. A little education goes a long way. Many people don’t realize that the population of coyotes all started with the almost complete annihilation of their cousins; the wolf. We massacred the wolves which opened the door for coyotes to move in. When will we learn that destroying wildlife only opens the door for other wildlife. Learn to live with them folks; they’re here to stay. Check out the information that Project Coyote has on their website. It’s very helpful and there’s a lot of information on how to coexist. projectcoyote.org
