Weekend Concerts Benefit Local Skimboarder
Guitarist Eric Henderson with special guests Steve Wood, Beth Fitchet and Bob Hawkins, will perform two concerts in Bridge Hall at the Neighborhood Congregational Church, 340 St. Ann’s Drive, at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 15.
The concert will benefit Henderson’s brother, Chris, known as Hendy, a local skimboarder, who recently underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his spine. He confronts sizeable medical bills now.
Tickets are $25 at the door, or $20 if purchased in advance at Sound Spectrum (1264 S. Coast Highway) or Laguna Leather (577 S. Coast Highway).
Tax-deductible Treats at ‘Girls Night’ Show
Join the pamper party and fundraiser that precedes the Thursday, May 19, performance of “Girls Night” at the Laguna Playhouse.
Organizers promise chocolates, hair and make-up primping and hors d’oeuvres during “Girls Night Out,” a pre-production party that starts at Tiare International Hair Salon at 3 p.m., at 260 Forest Ave., No. 5, near the downtown theater.
Come in for a complimentary beauty touch up before enjoying complimentary Right signature cocktails, Stalker Fine Food hors d’oeuvres topped off by treats from Verdun Fine Chocolates.

Local Chefs Help Fight Hunger
Share Our Strength’s “Taste of the Nation” fundraiser to help end childhood hunger in Laguna Beach and across the country will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Montage Resort and Spa on May 22. Guests will enjoy fine foods paired with wines and other libations. The event will also feature a silent auction and live entertainment.
Six of the area’s well-known chefs will participate in the gastronomic event. In addition to Craig Strong, executive chef at the Montage, participating chefs/restaurants will include Joachim Splichal of Patina, Los Angeles; Alex Stratta of Las Vegas; Scott Conant of Scarpetta, New York, Los Angeles and the Food Network; Alan Wong, of Alan Wong’s Restaurant in Honolulu; and Mark Peel, of Campanile, Los Angeles.
Funds raised through Taste of the Nation events support No Kid Hungry, Share Our Strength’s campaign to end childhood hunger in America. “An end to childhood hunger in the United States is within reach,” said Bill Shore, founder and executive director of Share Our Strength.

Celebrating Local Heroes in Film
The fourth annual Laguna Hero Fest, recognizing local heroes working to effect positive change and local students who have produced art and short films, is set for 6 p.m. on June 5 at Seven-Degrees.
The event includes a selection of hero-themed films, art work by local students and a silent auction to benefit the sponsor, the non-profit My Hero Project, which promotes media literacy.
Film selections for this year’s event include: “Together We Can Create World Peace,” a documentary by Top of the World Elementary student Emily Baker that captures the sand painting mandala ritual by Tibetan monks that visited Laguna Beach last year; “Waves 4 Water,” produced by Hurley International, a tribute to Laguna native, humanitarian and pro surfer Jon Rose, bringing clean water to the people of Haiti; and “Greg MacGillivray,” a tribute to the local filmmaker’s efforts to protect the world’s oceans.
