The Laguna Beach 12 and under girls water polo team captured silver for the second consecutive year at the Junior Olympics Orange County tournament, held Aug. 4-7.

The younger girls, led by Sophia Lucas, Angelique Begay and Thea Walsh in goal, were able to get the team through the first two days undefeated.  The team opened with 12-5 and 14-5 victories respectively against Davis and Santa Barbara Water Polo Club “B” on Thursday.  They followed up with a 17-8 win against Los Alamitos and a 12-6 win against United on Friday.

Laguna brought out the big guns of Bella Baldridge and Aria Fischer for the quarter-final game against Saddleback El-Toro Water Polo Club (SET) on Saturday. The game was tied 2-2 after the first quarter, but Laguna pulled away for a relatively easy 13-6 victory, setting up a trip to the semi-finals on Sunday.

The semi-final game was against Commerce, which was a rematch of the 12 & under girls championship game last year, which Commerce won 7-6.  It was a different outcome this year, as Laguna led the entire game and came through with an 8-5 victory.

In the championship match Sunday, No. 2 seeded Laguna faced top-seeded Santa Barbara Water Polo Club’s A squad. Laguna jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but Santa Barbara came away with an 11-5 win, giving the Laguna 12 & under girls team the silver medal for the second year in a row.
