Laguna traveled to Newport Harbor last Tuesday, Sept. 29 and picked up a four-set victory over the Sailors 25-20, 17-25, 28-26, 25-19. Laguna cruised through set one but went down 7-0 in the second set and never challenged.

In the third set, Breakers trailed early but took a lead at 10-9 off a Cameron Dorn kill. Laguna then fell behind and trailed by four points until pulling even at 19 on a long rally that ended with a Newport hitting error. From there neither team could pull a two point edge until the Breakers prevailed 28-26 winning on a Katelyn Carballo service ace and Dorn cross court kill, her third try in the final point attempt.

The fourth set was no contest as the Tars proved to be a compliant host, frustrating their long-time coach Dan Glenn (30th season) and Laguna easily won 25-19. Overall in the match Cameron Dorn led the Breakers with 15 kills followed by Sage Patchell with 11 and Katelyn Carballo with 10. Carballo also led on defense with 18 digs and three aces while Patchell handed most of the serve receives with 35 passes followed by Carballo with 18 and Kendyl Brennen with 17. Aspen Rocha added 24 set-assists and Lauren LaMontagne chipped in 10 assists, an ace and four digs. Newport still leads the all-time best-of-five set series at 28-13.

On Thursday, Oct. 1 league play opened with Laguna cruising past Costa Mesa 25-11, 25-18, 25-20 behind Lexi McKeown’s 10 kills and Kendyl Brennan’s seven aces. It was the Breakers 91st consecutive league win and extended the series edge with the Mustangs to 55-1.
