Baseball (7-1, 3-0)

Laguna rolls – Lions Tournament Next

Breaker bats continue to swing at a torrid pace (.414) as Laguna picked up a pair of league wins blasting Saddleback 23-2 and Estancia 11-2 to extend their league conference streak to 22 in a row.

Against Saddleback on Friday, March 21, at Laguna, Grant Wilhelm hit two triples to tie the single game record as did Steven Harrison with three doubles. Richie Nunis hit a three run homer in the fifth inning as Laguna prevailed 23-2.

The squad had 25 hits including a single game record-tying nine doubles. Will McInerny went four innings for the win (2-0) while Anthony Norelli finished the final three innings.

On Tuesday, March 25, at Skipper Carrillo Field, the Breakers defeated Estancia 11-2 as Zac Kovacic (2-1) went five innings to earn the win, Richie Nunis with three strikeouts pitched one inning and Anthony Norelli completed one inning of relief with two strikeouts. Breakers picked up nine stolen bases and 13 hits.

Laguna competed this past week at Calvary on Friday for a league game and then will open the 40th Anaheim Lions tournament at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, at Anaheim’s Brookhurst Park hosting Magnolia. Breakers will face Viewmont/Bountiful Utah at 4:30 p.m. at Boysen Park, also in Anaheim.

Boys Golf (1-6, 0-1)

Calvary Chapel outshot the Breakers 201-214 on Monday, March 24, at Mile Square Golf Course. Laguna also lost a 204-230 non-league match to Sage Hill on Thursday, March 20 at Strawberry Farms. 

Girls Sand Volleyball (2-0)

Laguna will next play at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, against Huntington Beach and again at 1 p.m. with Mater Dei. The courts are located near the pier.

Softball (1-12, 0-1)

The softball team lost a league game to Estancia 23-1 on Thursday, March 20 at Thurston Field and a non-league contest 14-5 to Rancho Alamitos on Tuesday, March 25

Swimming (Boys 2-0, Girls 2-0)

Varsity Boys: Laguna Beach – 120, Calvary Chapel – 47

Key races: In the 200 medley relay, Erik Juliusson, Cameron Karkoska, Max Morgan, Cade Baldridge took first place in a CIF automatic qualifying time of 1:45.71.

In the 100 freestyle, boys swept with Max Morgan taking first in 49.80 (CIF auto qualifying time), Cameron Karkoska second in 49.89, and Cade Baldridge third in 52.38

Varsity Girls: Laguna Beach – 123, Calvary Chapel – 30

In the 50 freestyle, Laguna girls took the top three, Cara Borkovec in 25.12 (CIF time), Bella Baldridge in 27.08, and Faith Hale in 28.19, respectively. In the 100 butterfly, Lila Vera took a solid first place in 1:01.13 qualifying for CIF. In the 100 freestyle, Cara Borkovec also took first in 54.51 (CIF time).

The league showdown with Costa Mesa was at the home pool on Wednesday, March 26.

Boys Tennis (3-5, 2-0)

Laguna won their league showdown with Estancia on Thursday, March 20 on the local courts. Ryan Gee swept his two singles matches 6-3, 6-1 while the top doubles team of Alex Duong/Zach Washer swept 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 and the second doubles team of Tim Nguyen/Ethan Gee won 6-3, 6-0, 6-0. Breakers split their matches last season with the Eagles snapping a 45 match win streak, but appear to be in command to extend their league title string to seven consecutive years.

This past Tuesday, March 25, Laguna lost a 12-6 non-league match to Huntington Beach. Breakers picked up wins in singles as Ryan Gee and Sterling Dudley-Bowen won two of three sets while No. 2 singles player Stuart Webb defeated the No. 3 opponent 6-2. Alex Doung/Zack Washer picked up the only doubles victory defeating the Oiler’s third team 6-2.

Track (Boys 2-0, Girls 2-0)

Breakers opened the league dual meet season last week as the boys squad defeated Saddleback 82-48 and Costa Mesa 68-55 while the girls took the Roadrunners 69-49 and the Mustang girls 79-33. No other details were provided by the coaches.

Boys Volleyball (4-3, 1-0)

On Tuesday, March 25, at Godinez, Alec Wulff made his debut at setter leading Laguna to a 25-22, 25-11, 25-18 win over the hosts Grizzlies (5-3, 0-1). The 6-3 Wulff dished out 30 set assists, recorded five kills, four block assists in the victory. Noah Blanton had 13 kills, Nick Rieckhoff had four aces, Jake Hexburg picked up seven kills and a solo block. JP Wollam was the dig leader with 12 while Lucas Capobianco was very sharp in serving and in serve-receive passing.

Laguna has won 49 consecutive league matches and a 119 straight set victories since 2009.
