Friendship Shelter has been saving lives and helping homeless individuals for 25 years and today serves as operators of the only homeless shelter in south Orange County.  To mark its anniversary, the shelter plans a series of events, including a drive for hosts for its signature event, “Friendship Shelter Dinners,” formerly known as “Dinners Across Laguna.”

About 400 of these private fundraising events have been held in hosts’ homes over  the past 21 years, raising $1.5 million to support the work of Friendship Shelter. This year the event spans from February to April.

The “dinners” have actually included an array of culinary experiences from Sunday brunch to themed events focusing on a holiday, cocktail receptions to a sock hop dance party.  All events are planned and underwritten by hosts, who open their own homes to guests to help make a difference.

Guests learn first-hand how funds raised help rebuild lives, treated to a short presentation by a current resident or graduate who candidly tells their personal story.

Chairing this year’s effort is board member Bob Mister.

Friendship Shelter serves more than 500 homeless adults each year. The organization provides a  self-sufficiency program to 32 men and women at a time in Laguna Beach and also operates the city’s 45-person emergency shelter, located on Laguna Canyon Road.
