Jackie was born Sipp Bayes Stanford on Jan. 19, 1924, in Catlettsburg, Ky. She and her mother shared the name Sipp Bayes (commemorating a Kentucky riverboat), but she was always known as Jackie, after her father Jack Stanford.

An only child, Jackie attended St. Patrick’s Academy in Washington D.C., Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va., and the University of Kentucky, Lexington. After marrying fellow Kentuckian Robert Harold Porter, she lived in both Kentucky and Ohio before settling in Southern California in 1961. Jackie and Bob moved to Laguna Beach in 1967.

Porter worked for 18 years at Thurston Middle School in Laguna Beach, followed by 14 years at the University of California, Irvine. She worked at the Sawdust Festival in Laguna Beach for many years as well. These years, working in education and living in Laguna Beach, were some of the happiest of her life.

Porter loved music, books, theater, and movies. She was exceptionally well read and loved nothing better than discovering a new author or book. Her shelves, closets, and floors were literally overflowing with books. She loved Kentucky and the Kentucky Derby. She loved Laguna Beach and she loved St. Mary’s Church. She loved and valued her friends. She loved laughter. More than anything else, she loved her family with abandon.

Son John C. Porter, daughter Nancy A. Haupenthal, son in law John Robert Haupenthal III, grandsons John Haupenthal IV and Scott Haupenthal, daughter in law Christina Haupenthal, and great grandson John Haupenthal V survive Jackie, and will miss her always.

A memorial service in celebration for the life of Jackie Porter will be held Saturday, March 12, at 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Laguna Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Laguna Beach (outreach programs), or a local organization dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals.
