Laguna Beach resident Joan Colvin intends to set out this Sunday in Huntington Beach on a 13-mile run, her fifth time running the Surf City Marathon.

The race was a favorite run of her late husband, John Colvin, who was killed last June in a collision with a motorist in North Laguna while riding his bike training for an Ironman triathlon. This year, she and a group of 18 friends will don lime green shirts and race to keep John Colvin’s memory alive.

The Irvine Chamber of Commerce where Colvin held several leadership positions has created the John Colvin Memorial Scholarship in his honor. The outdoor lover and mountain biker at age 40 challenged himself with a first marathon He qualified for the Boston Marathon following his 50th birthday and at 54 completed his first triathlon, a half Ironman.

Joan Colvin ran her first half marathon in 2011, having been trained by her husband. On Sunday she will run to honor her husband’ s commitment and passion. “I can’t do the biking and the swimming, but I can do this,” she said.

The John Colvin Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a student that demonstrates commitment to family, education, fitness and community.
