Laguna Beach Unified School District ranks second in Orange County for overall percentage of students who met or exceeded state standards, the district said in an announcement this week.

In spring, local students in grades 3-8 and 11 participated in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress test, assessments for literacy and mathematics. These tests are based on state academic standards and require the ability to write clearly, think critically and solve problems.

As the test was introduced in 2014-2015, this year’s results allow the first year-to-year measure of student progress.

The percentage of students who met the English language standards for grades 3-8 increased in 2016 compared to 2015, though grade 11 results remained unchanged the statement said.

With the exception of a one percent decline in math by seventh-graders, results by all other grade levels this year exceeded the percentage of students who met math standards in 2015.

“Our students continue to succeed in Laguna and that is a testament to their hard work, as well as the continued effort of their families, our teachers, staff and district leadership,” said Superintendent Jason Viloria.

Top of the World Elementary scores beat all Orange County district averages in English language for grades 3-5 and for fifth-grade math. Ninety-two percent of TOW’s fifth-graders met or exceeded the English standards, 12 percent above the Irvine USD’s district average.

At Laguna Beach High School, 82 percent of 11th-graders either met or exceeded the English standards, the highest district percentage in the county, says the statement.

Laguna’s results in several areas were the highest in the county: math in sixth- seventh- and eighth-grade; and in English in sixth-and eighth-grade, says the statement.

Laguna Beach Unified is tied with Los Alamitos USD for the second highest overall results in the county, falling just one percentage point below Irvine USD.
