One man died and another driver was injured Thursday night near Laguna Beach’s El Morro school when a driver lost control of his vehicle being driven at speeds exceeding 100 mph, the CHP reported. Duy Nguyen, 24, of Santa Ana died in the 7:34 p.m. collision on Coast Highway, according to the coroner’s website. A 47-year-old Laguna Beach woman also suffered major injuries when her car broadsided Nguyen’s vehicle and was transported to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, the CHP said.

A hearing is scheduled for June 20 in a lawsuit filed by some residents and businesses in Laguna Canyon, seeking damages from cities and the builder of the toll road due to December 2010 flooding that destroyed their property and placed them in jeopardy, the Orange County Register reported.

Plans for Irvine’s Great Park, envisioned for the former El Toro Marine base, are now in jeopardy after state officials ruled Wednesday that $1.4 billion in property funds can’t be spent to transform what had been billed as America’s next great urban park, the Los Angeles Times reported.
