Law Enforcement Signals its Stance on Local Measures

electionbannerThe Laguna Beach Police & Fire Management Association urges a yes vote on Vital Services Measure LL and a not vote on Measure KK, says a statement.

Measure LL would increase the tax on hotel guests by 2% to raise approximately $2 million per year.

In placing Measure LL on the ballot, the City Council said that they intend to use those added funds principally to provide additional resources for public safety — fire protection, emergency medical response, law enforcement, marine safety, disaster preparedness and accelerated utility undergrounding, says the statement by Darin Lenyi, the association president.

By contrast, the association describes Measure KK as an initiative that “would do harm” to the community.

Measure KK would permit virtually no ownership vetting, public input or operational oversight by the city and would generate little, if any, local tax revenue to offset the costs these drug sales facilities would impose on local taxpayers, Lenyi said

LL Puts Residents Needs First

The South Laguna Civic Association board endorses Measure LL, says a statement issued this week.

Being able to address the impact of tourism on residents and the need for more financial resources to support these efforts are clearly linked, President Greg O’Loughlin says in a statement.

O’Loughlin noted that Measure LL, an increase in the Transient Occupancy Tax, will provide additional funds for these additional efforts as well as other priorities, such as beach protection, public safety, emergency response services, utility undergrounding, improving cleanliness of sidewalks and streets and other services.

Moorlach Defends Trash Talk

Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger won’t vote for Donald Trump. Former POW and presidential candidate John McCain withdrew his support for Trump. Others have done the same in recent days. But not State Senator John Moorlach, Ari Grayson, a challenger for the 37th Senate District, says in a statement.

Moorlach, in issuing a statement reported by the Register newspaper Sunday, Oct. 9, defended Trump. “We have a society that is confused about morality, marriage, and proper boundaries. Although inappropriate, it seems like most people are guilty of some form of trash talk,” Moorlach says in his statement.

Defending these behaviors is insulting and condones a rape culture, said Grayson, a Laguna Beach resident in a statement. “It’s not society’s moral compass that’s broken; it’s John Moorlach’s,” Grayson said.

Savary Outraged by her Opponent’s Support for Trump

In attacking party members for defending their beliefs, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher showed his lack of respect for women by criticizing House Speaker Paul Ryan, 48th Congressional District challenger Sue Savary said in a statement.

Ryan distanced himself from Trump over his comments about groping women.

“Rohrabacher’s willingness to back Trump’s behavior can only be explained by his own votes against women,” Savery said, noting his votes against the Lily Ledbetter Act for equal pay for equal work and the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act.

At a town hall debate in Newport Beach on Oct. 3, Rohrabacher said that women could “hire a lawyer” if they didn’t like the way they were treated.

  1. Local initiatives are extremely important as this election year has shown the unraveling of the federal government by social media.

I will support local measures like LL to promote a clearer picture of what government is and follow an example of an undistracted path.
