58th Homecoming Blowout

Record Win for Laguna

Breakers shattered their homecoming game scoring record, routing Estancia 59-14 Friday, Oct. 18, at Guyer Field and sending the large alumni crowd home happy.

The Breakers advanced 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in Orange Coast League play. Laguna rolled up 515 yards on the ground and 584 yards in total offense, both third highest totals in school history despite the Southern Section CIF required running clock for the final period.

It took less than a minute into the game for the Breakers to initially score as they marched 57 yards after a botched on-side kick try by the Eagles to go up 7-0 on a Nathan Lancaster run.

Estancia countered with a sharp 13-play drive of their own, only to stall inches from the goal line when their fourth down pass play was stuffed short of paydirt.

Laguna’s second drive ended midfield on an interception, which was converted to a quick three play scoring drive by the visitors. That was the end of the Estancia threat as they failed to seriously move the ball after that while Laguna just kept scoring.  The Eagles possessions after their first quarter touchdown averaged only five net yards for each of their next eight possessions until they finally scored late into the final period down by 49 points.

Freshman Bruce Knill tied the Laguna kick-scoring, single-game record with 11 points including eight PAT’s,  matching Todd Merz versus Bishop in 2001 and Robbie McInerny against Ocean View in 2011. The holder, Cole Paxson, and snapper, Jake Smith, deserve a piece of the credit for the record night.

Lancaster became the No. 2 career scorer and rusher for Laguna with another remarkable single-game performance. Lancaster does have a shot at breaking the career rushing mark set last season by Drake Martinez. The former is averaging an amazing 12.2 yards per carry for his three-year career, amassing 2,837 yards on 233 rushes. Homecoming king Andres DeLaRosa has also provided a big threat to the Laguna offense so far with 589 rushing yards this season averaging 9.5 yards-per-carry.

Breakers faced pass-happy Calvary Chapel this past Thursday, Oct. 24, at Scott Field and will close out the regular season with Godinez next Thursday, Oct. 31, at Segerstrom Field and the season on Nov. 8 hosting league favorite Costa Mesa at Guyer Field. Laguna will need one win among the three to advance to the playoffs.
