Rancho Dominguez’s Lobos ventured to Laguna Beach’s Guyer Field in the Breakers first-ever meeting with a Los Angeles Unified District school in 79 varsity seasons.  The visitors were fresh off a 26-16 victory over Hollywood and looked capable on film, but the Breakers had no problems in shutting down their offense and earning Laguna’s first shutout in seven years. The latter dates back 81 games to a 18-0 victory over La Quinta/Westminster on Sept. 8, 2006. Laguna’s defense led by LG Graves frustrated the visitors with only three plays exceeding 10 yards.

Laguna scored on their first possession going 82 yards in five plays with Nathan Lancaster scoring on a 27 yard run. The kick attempt was spoiled on a bad snap to Jack Simon by the Laguna quarterback, who scrambled and found Jake Smith in the end zone for a pass for two points.

Laguna stalled on their next possession but scored again on their third try early in the second quarter going 80 yards in nine plays. Lancaster’s kick failed and the score was 14-0.

Dominguez struggled as they did on all their possessions, allowing Laguna to run the score to 21-0 as the Breakers drove only 56 yards to score after a 28-yard punt return by Lancaster set up excellent field position.  Laguna failed to score on their fifth and final possession of the half as their six-play drive faltered.

Laguna’s first two possessions of the second half ended on a fumble and interception. Laguna scored on the third try going three plays for the score to make it 28-0 after the kick.

The Lobos last possession ended in the closing seconds of the game when Lancaster picked off the desperation pass and easily ran 91 yards for the final touchdown, fourth longest interception return in Laguna history.  It was Lancaster’s ninth career touchdown going 50 yards or more in length.

Up next – The Breakers travel to San Juan Capistrano to play a very good St. Margaret’s team Friday, Sept. 27, at the Tartan’s campus. The hosts are the top ranked East Valley (D-12) school that lost to Laguna 31-17 last season.
