Breakers Open CIF with Win

Girls Volleyball (20-9, 10-0)

Laguna rallied to edge Claremont (14-13) in a wild match on Tuesday at Dugger Gym in the first round of the SSCIF D-1A playoffs 21-25, 26-24, 25-19, 25-23. The # 2 seeded Breakers never found a hitting rhythm against the scrappy Wolfpack from the Sierra League.  The first set was tied multiple times before Claremont pulled away from 19-19 to win. Breakers took an early lead in the second set before having to hang on for the set win. In the third set, strong play from Danielle Quirarte and Sage Patchell helped Laguna cruise to the win. In the fourth set, strong passing from Samantha Kruger coupled with tough blocking by Aspen Rocha, Kelsey Paul, Quirate, and Patchell helped seal the win after the Breakers gave up a big lead to make the fans nervous at the end. Overall, top honors went to Sabrina Stillwell with 13 kills, two aces and 11 digs, while Cameron Dorn added 14 kills and six assists. Patchell with 13 kills, two block assists, and 18 digs, Aspen Rocha had six kills, two aces, 15 digs and 37 assists.

Breakers played their second round yesterday (Thursday) at San Juan Hills, Sea View Leagues # 2 team this season. Should Laguna prevail, Saturday would be Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks or Villa Park with semi’s looking like a show down with Harvard Westlake or Chino Hills. Every round will be difficult as this year’s bracket is very balanced. Defending section champion is La Salle.
